Insurance Pay Claims To Victim's Families Of June Air Crash Of Over 100,000 dollars On Behalf O Dana Airline

By : Unknown

INSURANCE PAY CLAIM (MAKE YOUR SAVINGS COVER YOUR FUTURE)
The management of DANA Air on Thursday said it has commenced the final payment of 70,000 dollars (about N10.5 million) to families of each of the victims of the June 3 air crash in Lagos.
The Head of Corporate Communications, DANA Air, Mr. Tony Usidamen, made the disclosure in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
It will be recalled that a DANA flight from Abuja to Lagos crashed on June 3 at Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, killing all 153 persons aboard, and some others on the ground.
Usidamen explained that 70,000 dollars was being paid to each of the families of the victims by Prestige Assurance Limited, Insurer of Dana Air.
“The final payment is necessary after the advance payments of 30,000 dollars (about N4.7 million) to over 80 families,” he said.
Usidamen noted that the Civil Aviation Act stipulated that the sum of 100,000 U.S. dollars, about N15 million, be paid as compensation to families of victims of air disasters.
“Following receipt of Letter of Authentication from the Probate Registry, our insurer has begun balance payment of 70,000 U.S. dollars to affected families.
“Only four other families have so far, presented the requisite Grant of Probate or Letter of Administration, and payment will shortly be made to them too.
“In order to assess and verify full compensation, it is necessary for claimants to produce the required Grants of Probate or Letters of Administration,” he said.
Usidamen noted that the letter should be authenticated by the Probate Registry before the final payment.

Mint Scandal: N2.1 Billion Worth Of N1,000 Notes Missing

By : Unknown

From Leadership
The board of directors of the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) met yesterday over the scandal that rocked the establishment where it was revealed that a whopping N2.1 billion of newly printed N1,000 notes have mysteriously gone missing.
The board meeting, chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, decided to expand the investigation and audit the production of other currency denominations to ascertain the quantity of money that has actually gone missing over the years.
LEADERSHIP had exclusively reported that an acting managing director, Ahmed Bamali, had been appointed to head the Mint company while Ehi Okomoyon, who was the chief executive, was asked to proceed on indefinite leave.

A source with insider knowledge of what transpired at the meeting told LEADERSHIP that the suspension of Okoyomon as managing director on an indefinite basis until all investigations have been concluded was reaffirmed.

The head of security at the NSPMC, Emmanuel Bala, has also been asked to go on compulsory leave by the board of directors of the company. The general manager, management services, Obi Igoban is expected to write him the letter of suspension today.
LEADERSHIP also gathered that the board faulted the suspended MD for failing to disclose to it that such amounts of money had gone missing even though the company had set up an internal investigation after a mint staff was arrested in Lagos for being in possession of unnumbered bank notes.

The board meeting, which reportedly started at about 10am, did not end until 3pm. Other than the initial audit report, the board also discussed routine and budgetary issues.
The CBN had to set up its own audit team, whose findings were put to the board yesterday, and a unanimous vote affirmed that Okoyomon should continue on indefinite suspension.
Part of the CBN audit team’s investigation is to unravel why the management of the Mint company has consistently refused to place Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) in its Abuja and Lagos factories, and why other security measures were deliberately set aside.

The audit team had, however, established that the theft of printed bank notes could be traced to security lapses and security personnel who take custody of newly printed bank notes, and when there were shortages, they were never reprimanded. The entire security department is said to be directly under the supervision of MD.

LEADERSHIP also learnt that this would be the second time that Okoyomon would be going on suspension as he suffered a similar experience in 2007 for three months when Charles Soludo, who had appointed him in the first place, was CBN governor.
After seven and a half years on the job, Okoyomon has been the longest serving MD of the NSPMC, with previous chief executives spending an average of five years in office

Man accused of killing pregnant lover

By : Unknown

From  PUNCH
The family of a lady, Gloria Akpan, has accused their daughter’s lover, Ita Eyo, of killing her in his residence in Ayobo area of Ogun State.
Gloria and Eyo both from Akwa Ibom State had been cohabiting since March 2012 before the sad incident occurred on November 3. The lady was six-month pregnant before she died.
A family source, who craved anonymity, said when he spoke to Gloria on Friday, a day before her death, she told him that all was well, adding that it was shocking to learn that she had died the next day.
The source said, “Without seeing any member of the family, that same Saturday, they hurriedly buried her.

“This is suspicious. The information we got was that she was strangled as she bled through her nose and mouth.”

Father of the deceased, Mr. Edet Akpan, 66, a retiree of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, corroborated the family source, insisting that his child was murdered.
Akpan told PUNCH Metro amid sobs, that Eyo, had in March this year asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

He said it was a transport operator, simply called Akintunde that brought Eyo to their home at NDLEA Compound at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Expectedly, Akpan said during the meeting, he told Eyo to come with his people when they were ready.

Akpan said, “After that meeting, I travelled to my country home in Akwa Ibom. Since I have retired, I have been alternating between home and Lagos.

“While I was still in my hometown, my wife, Gloria’s stepmother, phoned me. She said my daughter had moved out of the house. I exclaimed, ‘move to where?’ She said she had gone to Eyo’s house.
“She also said it was Eyo’s friend, Akintunde that came to take her to the place.

“The news jolted me and I had to rush back to Lagos. When I came back, I set out to search for her whereabouts but my effort was unsuccessful as I neither knew the address of Akintunde nor Eyo’s.”

He said he later got Akintunde on the phone.

Akpan said when he called Akintunde, Eyo and Gloria were with him.
He said, “When I got Akintunde on the phone, he handed the phone over to Eyo. After quarrelling with Eyo, I asked him to pass the phone to Gloria and he did.

“Gloria told me she was well and assured me that she would come home soon. I even asked of my grandson whom she took along with her and she said he was okay.”
Akpan lamented that instead of his daughter coming back home, the news he got the following day was that she had died.

He said, “On Saturday, Akintunde and a woman, came to inform me that my daughter had died. I was confused. I took them to my elder brother’s house. My elder brother asked them to deposit her corpse in the mortuary for further action.

“The same day, I asked my son to go to Eyo’s house. My son told me that they had buried my daughter. This was done without the knowledge of any member of the family. We find the development curious. This is somebody he was not married to. That is why we believe my daughter was murdered for some sinister purposes.”

He said another reason he suspected Eyo was culpable in his daughter’s death was the account of an eyewitness, Gloria’s son, who was living with them.

Akpan said his grandson, who Gloria had for another man, told him that on the fateful day, Eyo and his mother had a disagreement resulting in Eyo pulling something out of the bed and hitting her several times before she died.

He said he headed for a nearby police station in Ikeja, Lagos where they detailed three policemen to arrest Akintunde.

He said with the aid of the policemen, Akintunde took them to Eyo’s house in Ayobo, Ogun State.
He said when they got to Ayobo, it was discovered that that the part where Eyo lives is within the jurisdiction of Ogun State Police Command.
From there, he went to Itele Police Station in Ota, Ogun State where some policemen were detailed to arrest Eyo.

He said Eyo was currently being held at Itele Police Station.

He appealed to the relevant authorities to bring the killer of his daughter to justice.
A police source at Itele Police Division said the Commissioner of Police, Ogun Command, had directed that the matter be taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department.

The source, who did not want his name mentioned, said the Divisional Crime Officer confirmed that the suspect was still being detained.

However, he said the father of the deceased had refused to show up, stressing that the suspect claimed he (Akpan) consented to the burial of his daughter.

“The matter is a murder case; the suspect is still being detained. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the matter be taken to the SCID, Abeokuta,” the source said

Jonathan cautions aides against attacking Obasanjo

By : Unknown

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has directed his aides to stop the media war against former President Olusegun Obasanjo with a warning that any aide that errs will lose his job.
The PUNCH learnt in Abuja that the presidential directive came on the heels of intervention by some unnamed chieftains of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.  The party lords were said to have asked the President to caution his aides.
A Presidency source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said some members of the party felt that the exchange of words between the President, his aides and the former President was not good for the image of the party.
The source said, “The party informed the President that the members of the opposition could capitalise on the disagreement to cause a major friction between the two leaders of the party.
“The President has directed his aides not to speak either directly or indirectly on anything that is injurious to the former President on any issue. This is because some leaders of the PDP have advised him not to take on the former President in a fight.
“Apart from the political implication of such, we also believe that it could heat up the polity and cause tension in both the party and the polity.
“Moreover, the party has seen that the opposition is already trying to make gains from the fight and that will not be a good thing either for the two leaders or our party.
“The President respects Obasanjo. He will not do anything that will widen the gap between them. I am sure that the disagreement will be settled.
“Besides, there are no plans by the President to witch-hunt Obasanjo with any probe.”
A member of the National Working Committee of the party, who spoke with selected journalists in Abuja on Sunday, said the party was worried about the increasing animosity between the two senior members of the party.
Obasanjo was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP until April this year when he resigned his appointment.
Obasanjo stirred a hornet’s nest recently when he gave an indication that Jonathan might be a weak leader because of the way he had been handling the security challenges facing the country.
The former President said he directed the security agencies to fish out the militants who killed some security men in Odi, Rivers State, during his tenure as President.
Jonathan however used the occasion of his Media Chat to respond to Obasanjo’s comment, saying the invasion of Odi during Obasanjo’s presidency did not solve the problem.
Rather, he said, innocent lives were lost as the security operatives did not succeed in killing the militants that were suspected to have killed the security men.

Vice President Namadi Sambo to get a N2billion home

By : Unknown

Our Vice President is getting a home worth N2 billion from the government of Nigeria. There's a N50bn budget for the Federal Capital Territory and N2bn, according to the FCT Minister Bala Mohammed, is going into the construction of the official residence of Vice President Namadi Sambo, while N300 million is for the construction of the official residences of Senate president David Mark and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal; and his deputy, Emeka Ihedioha.
So my question is; if they are building new homes for these people, where were they living before now? First a N2bn 150-seater banquet hall, now a N2bn home for the VP. This is the priority of the Government of a country where more than half the population live on under $1 a day. #Standingovation
Oh and Julius Berger is handling the home construction, with 20 months as completion period.

Should government sack 50% of civil servants?

By : Unknown
viewpoint illustration
At the Second Annual Capital Market Retreat in Warri, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Lamido Sanusi, made a strong case against the current dedication of about 70 per cent of the nation’s income to purely consumption by civil servants and politicians, who comprise less than one per cent of a population of over 160 million.
In support of his advocacy, Sanusi suggested five areas in which recurrent expenditure can be reduced. First, he recommended downsizing the legislature and the related bloated salaries and allowances; second, he faulted the “wastage of funds for the maintenance of 774 local government council chairmen and their aides”; and consequently, suggested the removal of this third tier of governance. Third, he queried the need for 36 state governments, some of which are unviable. Sanusi also insisted on the total removal of fuel subsidy, and finally, recommended that “you have to fire half of the civil service, because the revenue government has is supposed to be for 167 million Nigerians.”
Really, if we genuinely desire infrastructural development, it will be difficult to oppose Sanusi’s overriding objective of redressing the current budget imbalance in favour of capital expenditure. Not surprisingly, however, pressure groups from those sectors, which would be adversely affected, have all come out with ‘gun-blazing’ attacks on these recommendations!
Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs,Victor Ogene, has countered that Sanusi lacks the moral right to call for reduction in either the size of the parliament or indeed, of the staff strength of the civil service, since the size of the CBN staff has increased by over 20 per cent, to over 6,000, since Sanusi became Governor. Consequently, Ogene recommended that Sanusi should first clean up the CBN’s ‘Augean stable’, in which an annual budget of over N300bn is expended without any legislative approval or oversight authority to ensure transparency and accountability!
The Trade Union Congress President, Peter Esele, alternatively, described Sanusi as not just professionally misguided, but is also one of the “most idle persons” in the country. Esele maintains that “all the overhead that the Governor is talking about go to the politicians”, whom he describes as the highest paid anywhere in the world.
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdul Waheed Omar, in his reaction, advised the Federal Government “to ignore the ranting of this hollow economist, who has never demonstrated patriotism in all his advice on economic and financial management of Nigeria…. Sanusi’s only understanding of governance is simply about saving money and not saving lives, as his proposals are repeatedly devoid of human content and without consideration for the implication on larger society”.
Omar warned on the excessive burden that the sack of 50 per cent of civil servants will add to the already suffocated unemployment market, and therefore reminded Sanusi that “governance is about improving the quality of lives of the people and not the destruction of productive lives”.
Omar concluded that the suggestion for scrapping of the local government councils in a country that runs a federal system “is an indication of how unknowledgeable and unfit Sanusi is as a public office holder”.
Paradoxically, all the above vociferous critics of Sanusi’s recommendations would, nonetheless, agree on the obnoxious level of the cost of governance in Nigeria, but every one of these critics would stoutly resist any reduction to whatever benefits their constituencies enjoy under the current crippling dispensation.
The Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, who was the Chief Host at the Capital Market retreat, advised that before any rational government could take such a rash decision for mass sacking, it must develop the critical infrastructure that would attract investors. He concluded that instead of advocating the unpopular solution of sacking workers, the CBN should first put in place an enabling environment that would bring down interest rates to enable both the real sector and governments to access much cheaper loans for industrial regeneration and infrastructural enhancement respectively.
In reality, Uduaghan’s observation on the need for an enabling environment is probably the most constructive so far; the issue of a lean and more efficient civil service structure without further jeopardising the oppressive rate of unemployment in the country, can indeed, best be achieved with inflation and interest rates below five per cent. No economy has been known to grow with rapidly increasing employment opportunities, when core inflation hovers above 12 per cent and cost of borrowing to the real sector is about 25 per cent. Thus, our pursuit of a more efficient and cost-effective civil service structure would lead to double jeopardy for the economy, if we embarked on mass retrenchment to reduce recurrent expenditure without creating the enabling environment for the real sector to grow and quickly absorb those laid off!
Besides, necessary first steps in any serious attempt to cut recurrent expenditure should certainly include reduction in duplication and waste in governance, as well as decrease in corruption and the humongous fraud in fuel subsidy payments.
Fortunately, even if the policies and public comments of the ebullient CBN Governor reflect an anti-social mindset, as claimed, it is still undoubtedly within Sanusi’s powers to create an enabling environment for industries to thrive, for employment opportunities to increase and for social welfare to improve. The critical variables of inflation, interest rates, stable purchasing power, and exchange rate are within the purview of the CBN’s core mandate of price stability, which is currently made unattainable by recurring systemic excess cash.
Paradoxically, the ‘curse’ of excess liquidity is deliberately sustained with the CBN’s anti-people monetary payment model, which entails substitution of bloated naira allocations for dollar-denominated revenue.
In truth, Sanusi would successfully demonstrate a commendable passion for economic regeneration and improvement in social welfare of the masses, if he subscribes to a constitutionally compliant payments model, which adopts dollar certificates for payment of monthly allocations of dollar-derived revenue to constitutional beneficiaries. Incidentally, such payments reform will simultaneously dry up the systemic cash surfeit that funds corruption and waste in governance, and naturally predicate more efficient resource management.
The positive economic and social transformation that this will bring about in our economy will become evident even before Sanusi’s current term expires, and will remain sustained for years thereafter. The erstwhile controversial Governor would ultimately leave indelible revered footprints on the sands of time, as Nigerians, both living and yet unborn, will in retrospect, forever, remain grateful for his act of courage, in freeing our people from economic bondage and deepening poverty.

Former PR manager turns drinks vendor

By : Unknown

Nathaniel Iyanda
’NONYE BEN-NWANKWO and COMFORT OSEGHALE relate the sad story of a former public relations guru who is currently facing a hard time
About two decades ago, Nathaniel Iyanda, 63, was well known to many petroleum marketers and other key players in the oil and gas sector, who always sought his services as a public relations and advertising expert.
Iyanda was a pioneer member of the Board of Advertisers Association of Nigeria. Until May 1997, he was the Public Relations/Advertising Manager of the defunct Texaco Nigeria Plc (now MRS Plc).
At the peak of his career, he lived in a one-wing duplex in FESTAC Town. And before his exit from Texaco, he was the chairman of a major oil marketers’ public relations committee.
Indeed, it was Iyanda who directed the first and only country-wide public education campaign on the usage of engine oil, which was jointly sponsored by Agip, AP, ELF, Mobil, National, Texaco, Total and Unipetrol.
Now, Iyanda lives in Ibafo, a community on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. Gone is the luxury and the comfort that he was once accustomed to. Instead of enjoying retirement with his family, the former PR guru lives from hand-to-mouth and manages to earn a living by distributing beverages to restaurants around the community.
Looking quite frail, Iyanda cuts the picture of anything but the top-notch corporate executive that he used to be. His home is simple and modest. The only giveaway is his diction and in-depth knowledge of the petroleum marketing industry.
“I started working at a young age. After leaving secondary school, I sat for the London CAM Diploma examination in public relations, advertising and marketing. At 23 years, I was working with the Marketing Research Department of the United African Company. That was between1969 and 1975.  After that, I moved to the defunct Texaco, where I spent over 20 years.
“I left Texaco in 1997. The company was downsizing at the time. Actually, what happened was this: the company wanted to let go some senior executives, but it found itself in a dilemma. So, the management came up with this idea of retiring everyone who had worked in the company for over 15 years. That was how I left the company. Many good hands left at the time,” Iyanda recalled.
Although he was paid off, things began to go down the hill from that point.
“I invested about N1.5m in stocks and another N1m in fixed deposits. Although a public relations consulting wasn’t really an accepted practice at the time, I was fortunate to be a guest speaker on the subject at several events. I was even retained by Texaco as an external PR consultant.
“The string of misfortunes began when my contract with Texaco was discontinued. Even as an external consultant, the Managing Director still felt threatened by me and so, I left. After that, I went into multiple streams of businesses; at a time trading in calcium, a raw material used for paints. Then I moved into the sale of beans and maize.
“The calcium trade is uncertain because your profit is dependent on those who pulverize the calcium. If you own a pulverizing machine, then it is much more profitable. My partner, who owned such a machine packed up; as if that was not enough, I was defrauded of N300,000.
“It was tough trying to break into the beans trade. I have discovered that there is a cabal in charge of everything in this country and once you are not a member, you are eventually frustrated out. By 2002, I had hit rock bottom.”
Meanwhile, all through the years, Iyanda had yet to have a child.  Despite the difficulty, he never for once considered breaking up his home on that account. His wife, herself an only child, did not find the situation easy. But the couple held on to their faith and continued to trust in God.
Miraculously, when life had become most difficult for Iyanda, his wife eventually became pregnant.
“We had been married for 27 years before my wife got pregnant. It was not easy waiting all the while, but my parents and my in-laws were staunch Christians. So, they stood by us. In 2003, my wife was delivered of a baby boy. By then, I was broke and had no money. My stocks had been made useless by the crash in the stock market and the fixed deposit account I had was gone because the bank in which the money was saved, failed.  My wife and son were in Ibadan at the time. So, after discussing with her, we decided to sell our home in FESTAC town and move to another place,” Iyanda said.
Armed with the proceeds from the sale, Iyanda moved to Ibafo, purchased a parcel of land and began to build a small house. Despite his financial constraints, the building contractor allegedly duped him of a large sum of money, leaving him with nothing with which to begin life again.
“The plan was to build a small house and start another business with whatever was left, but the building contractor cleaned me out. The news went round the Ibafo community. By the time this house was completed, there was nothing left.
“As God would have it, while we were still in FESTAC Town, my wife  had converted our garage into some kind of store where we sold drinks. So, she suggested that we go into that line of business. That was how we went into partnership with a lady friend at Agege, who is a major distributor of soft drinks. We have been doing that for seven years now but all we get from it is just enough to go by every day. I finally have a child but there is no money to adequately take care of him. Things are so bad that paying school fees is really difficult. Yet, I cannot give him up because we have waited for a child for so long,” Iyanda lamented.
Until help comes his way, Iyanda will continue as a drinks vendor, living each day at a time.

Labour knocks Sanusi over call for mass sacking

By : Unknown

CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
The organised labour on Wednesday berated the Governor of Central Bank, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, for calling for the sacking of 50 per cent of civil servants and urged the Federal Government to remove him.
The Nigeria Labour Congress specifically said Sanusi must be sacked before he destroyed the Nigerian economy.
Other groups that condemned the CBN governor included the Trade Union Congress, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, the Civil Liberties Organisation and Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union.
Sanusi had, at the Second Annual Capital Market Committee Retreat in Warri, Delta State on Monday, said the country spent 70 per cent of its earnings on salaries and entitlements of civil servants.
“You have to fire half of the civil service because the revenue of the government is supposed to be for 167 million Nigerians. Any society where government spends 70 per cent of its revenue on its civil service has a problem. It is unsustainable,” he said.
The NLC, in a statement on Wednesday by its President, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, said Sanusi should be sacked immediately before his action set the country on the part of “ruination.”
He stated, “We see in Sanusi an agent of death that must be defeated and crushed before he further destroys the Nigerian economy.
“He must be asked to leave the office as he has shown more than enough incompetence and contempt for the Nigerian people.”
He stated that since Sanusi took over as Governor of CBN, his statements had created the impression that he was against the people and economy of Nigeria.
“Even if you sack all the workers in Nigeria, any amount saved from that will be stolen and the culprits will walk in freedom,” he added.
Omar also said the number of aides in the office of the CBN Governor would not portray him as a man genuinely committed to the reduction of cost of governance in the country.
President of the TUC, Mr. Peter Esele, said Sanusi’s claims were as ridiculous as they were untrue and should be ignored.
He recalled that Sanusi made sweeping statements about the overhead cost of the National Assembly without facts and could not substantiate his claims when he was taken up on the issue.
Esele said, “I am beginning to think that the CBN Governor is idle. I think the idleness may be leading to what is happening to him.
“The budget of the CBN is appropriated and vetted within the CBN, there is no checks and balances, and it is accountable to no one.”
Secretary-General of the Association of Civil Servants of Nigeria, Mr. Solomon Onaghinon, said the CBN governor’s statement was condemnable.
He said, “We are surprised because this is Sanusi, who does not want to produce his budget for the National Assembly to see. Now, if Sanusi wants to spend money and does not want the National Assembly to know how much he is spending, then all political office holders and core civil servants must as well be retrenched.”
According to him, salaries and allowances of civil servants are not more than 18 per cent of the total budget.
The CLO described Sanusi’s recommendation as insensitive.
Addressing a news conference in Lagos, Lagos State Chairman of the CLO, Mr. Ehi Omokhuale, described the call as “a backward statement” by a public office holder.
“There was no justification in the recommendation,” Omokhuale said.
The National President of RATTAWU, Mr. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, told NAN that the statement was “unfortunate and unbelievable’’.
Also, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria advised the Central Bank Governor to tender his resignation letter to buttress his call for the sack of 50 per cent federal of the country’s work force.
The National President of the association, Mr. Olakunle Olaitan, told the News Agency of Nigeria that Sanusi’s position was outrageous.

IT HURTS TO IMAGINE SANUSI REQUESTING THE SACK OF 50% OF GOVERNMENT WORKERS. WHAT KINDA ANALYSES WOULD HAVE LED TO THIS. KILLING THE GLORY OF MOST BANKERS ISN'T ENOUGH DAMAGE TO THE COUNTRY?

Cybercrime bill scales through second reading Share This

By : Unknown

Two bills seeking to provide a legal framework to combat computer misuse and cybercrime in Nigeria have passed second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bills, which were presented by rep. Aisha dahiru, seek to amend the criminal and penal codes to provide for offences and penalties for computer misuse and cybercrimes as she cited the recent gruesome killing of Cynthia Osokogu who was lured to Lagos, raped, robbed and strangled by her “friend” on a BlackBerry chat room as one of the ills of cybercrime which must be fixed during her lead debate on the bill.
According to her, the absence of cybercrime laws portrayed Nigeria as “very porous nation” for cybercrime.
Ahmed who described cybercrime as “well organised and coordinated enterprise” said the absence of cybercrime legislation has exposed sensitive economic, intelligence and security and sundry government outfit to hacking by cybercrime syndicates.
The Taraba lawmaker told lawmakers that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made 288 cybercrime- related arrests but 234 of the cases were still pending in court largely due to absence of cybercrime legislation to prosecute the cases.
Most members who contributed to the debate on the bill were unanimous in their submissions that it is time for the nation to have a cybercrime law.
Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila in his contribution to the debate said, “This issue (cybercrime and computer misuse) has become a menace to society that needs to be dealt with frontally.”
Most of the lawmakers supported the bills, saying it will empower law enforcement agencies to combat the crimes which have negatively affected Nigeria’s image internationally.

Ex-banker bows to pressure, suspends hunger strike

By : Unknown

Olubiyi Odunaro, the 53-year-old former employee of Hallmark Bank Plc., protesting against non-payment of his terminal benefit, on Monday suspended his 14-day hunger strike.
The   suspension of the protest followed spirited appeal by a representation from the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and officials from the Lagos office of the Public Complaints Commission.
Senior Special Assistant to Fashola on Justice Sector Reforms, Lanre Akinsola, who led a team of legal, welfare and medical officials to the tent Odunaro had turned to his home on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Lagos, promised to intervene.
Akinsola said, “The attention of the Lagos State Government was drawn to the various media reports about the protest being embarked upon by Odunaro and it’s quite pathetic.
“Governor Fashola who was worried about his state of health formed an inter-ministerial committee comprising medical, legal and welfare officials and directed me to lead the team to  persuade him to end his hunger strike.
“As a responsible government we don’t want a dead casualty in our hands as a result of this protest. Once he ends this protest, we would first provide him medical service while the Lagos State Directorate of Citizens Rights would engage the authorities concerned in a comprehensive dialogue.”
Akinsola said the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye, had given him his word on free legal services to Odunaro and other ex-workers of non-consolidated banks seeking the payment of their entitlements if the negotiations become unfruitful.
“We will mediate and talk to the right people and we believe reason will prevail in this matter and if not, lawyers from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice will work in conjunction with the lawyer of the group and ensure that justice prevails and everyone of them gets their entitlement,” he added.
John Ogunniyi, who led a legal team from the Public Complaints Commission, implored Odunaro to end the hunger strike.
He said, “The Lagos Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Funso Olukoga, sends his word that you end this protest and go back home while we look into your complaints.
“We’ve listened to the complaints and we are going back to report to the commissioner and see the best we can do concerning it.
“We are making this appeal because of your health and the negative consequences it may have on you. The commissioner has given us the authority to ensure that the matter is resolved.”
After persuasion and engagement by the state officials and consultation with members of the Association of Ex-Staff of Non-Consolidated Bank, who had gathered at the site which lasted for about three hours, Odunaro who clocked 53 on Monday announced the suspension of the protest.
He said, “This struggle is not only  about myself; it’s about the right of over 14,000 ex-workers of non-consolidated banks who are ably represented here today.
“The Lagos State Government and the PCC have  given me and my people their word and I would hold on to it. My other colleagues too have appealed to me to give the state government the opportunity to play their part in this matter.
“In view of this, I announce the suspension of my hunger strike for two weeks to enable me to  go for medical treatment and allow the state government play its part in this debacle.”
President, Association of  Ex-Staff of Non-Consolidated Bank, Magnus Maduka, said, “We  will be leveraging on the clout of the state government and the promises of the Public Complaints Commission to get our  entitlements which we  have  been fighting for for about seven years.”
As soon as he announced the suspension, the medical team from the Lagos State Ambulance Service who  had been waiting for hours led him into an ambulance marked LA 167 A08 at about 3:09pm and took him to the Medical Emergency of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Comments from Elizabeth Dede

Hmmm!! Oh yes, authentic radio report might confirm that the accident was a mere impersonation by hackers. Though the argument is said to continue until we confirm information to be valid. We should not ignore the fact below:
That the bridge consistently has consumed lives lately in the past few years most especially towards the end of the year. Superstitious believe you would say?, or a mere coincidence, but 'a frequent coincidence becomes a proven fact available for futuristic anaylses'
We keep morning and forget to plan or ask ourselves what is left if we were in such situations. God forbid
  • Do we believe we won't die, but live to declare the works of the lord. Oh yes, wonderful prayer said which is the wish of everyone even I the writer. But even the writer an composer of such statement in the bible 'David' himself is dead. This should make us realize death is inevitable, when and how? is the question. That's why I advice people to save little of their earnings, income or returns from investment and spread it over a long period of time say 5years/10yrs where this little accumulation would spring up to a wholesome affordable to take care of the future. In case of eventually, if died today our families get the lump sum we wish to achieve at the end of maturity not what we have saved so far. Should in case we don't die we collect all our savings, reinvest and renew our savings protection plan CLICK Me to see how it works
  • Do you wish to leave this earth without achieving the two most important reason of your existence. Which is to make heaven and impact lives. We can make heaven true following the true doctrine we believe, as I believe in Christ. You would agree heaven is still based on the grace of God to keep me away from sin. Not being a pastor now but saying the truth. Second reason to live (Impacting others) what you leave behind as inheritance to keep your friends and loved ones going. what impact have you made in the lives of your close ones or is your death gonna be an additional burden of burial expenses? Do you know just paying as low as =N=2,500 yearly make your beneficiaries earn at least 500,000 if you go today which you could afford to increase the lump sump paid to the CLICK ME to see how it works
  • Do we have enough reserves and savings to console or compensate the family of any of your loved ones caught in such situation. It is advisable you save 10% of your earnings against unforeseen circumstance where you could withdraw 90% of your account balance to console and show deep regret/sympathy other than just talking .CLICK ME MEGA Do you own a company with staffs which could be heading home and suddenly die. How would you compensate all families at a go. Do you know you could get a group life assurance to save this cost GROUP LIFE
  • But the painful truth is that Nigerians run away from insurance sales people, believing opening a savings account is doing the account officer a favour or thinking Insurance sales people preach death. We preach life after death and cover unforeseen circumstance. Be Informed!!!
We would Update you with more stories about the bridge as latest news unfolds

Match Report: Manchester United fight back to beat winless QPR

By : Unknown

New QPR manager Harry Redknapp watched his team surrender a second-half lead as they lost 3-1 against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The club, bottom of the table and under the temporary guidance of Mark Bowen, took the lead in the 52nd minute when Jamie Mackie scored.
But Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher were both on target with headers from Wayne Rooney corners, before Anderson set up Javier Hernandez for a cool finish to settle matters.
Victory took United back to the top of the Premier League standings ahead of Manchester City's trip to Chelsea.
West Brom earlier moved up to third spot after a Simon Mignolet howler in the lunchtime kick-off helped the Baggies beat Sunderland 4-2 at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats goalkeeper gifted Shane Long the simplest of opportunities to fire into an empty net after they were already leading through Zoltan Gera's superb strike.
In the other afternoon matches, Jordi Gomez's hat-trick spared Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi's blushes as they overcame Reading 3-2, Everton and Norwich drew 1-1 and Stoke edged Fulham 1-0.
